The Silver Birch – Betula pendula is one of our most graceful native trees. Its slender branches and distinctive white bark make it instantly recognisable in gardens. The bark starts as a warm brown on young trees, gradually developing its characteristic white colour with black diamond-shaped markings as it matures.

Small, heart-shaped leaves dance in the lightest breeze, creating a lovely shimmering effect throughout summer. These leaves turn a bright golden yellow in autumn before falling to reveal the tree’s elegant framework of drooping branches. Young stems often have a warm copper tone, adding extra winter interest.

This tree is brilliant for wildlife. Birds love to feed on the small seeds, while the bark and branches provide homes for many insects. The light canopy allows grass and flowers to grow beneath, making it perfect for natural garden schemes. Despite its delicate appearance, it’s incredibly tough and will grow almost anywhere.

Silver Birch grows well in most soils but prefers slightly acidic conditions. Plant in full sun or partial shade – they’re very adaptable. Water regularly for the first growing season, though established trees rarely need extra watering. Don’t prune in late winter or early spring as they may bleed sap. If pruning is needed, do it in late summer or early autumn. No regular feeding is necessary, though a spring mulch helps retain moisture.
