Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Wilma,’ commonly referred to as Monterey Cypress ‘Wilma,’ is a distinctive cultivar of the Monterey Cypress – Cupressus macrocarpa species. This cultivar is known for its unique appearance and features including it’s lemon scented foliage.
‘Wilma’ is a small to medium-sized evergreen conifer that has a columnar and upright growth habit. It typically grows to a height of around 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters) with a spread of about 1 to 2 feet (0.3 to 0.6 meters). Its narrow, columnar shape makes it well-suited for smaller garden spaces or as an accent plant.
What sets ‘Wilma’ apart is its striking golden-yellow foliage. The leaves are arranged in ascending sprays and add a vibrant burst of colour to the landscape. When the needles are crushed, they release a delightful lemon fragrance.
To maintain its brilliant golden-yellow colour, ‘Wilma’ should be planted in full sun. It is known for retaining its vivid foliage even during the winter months when exposed to sufficient sunlight.
This cultivar is considered slow-growing, adding only about 6 inches (15 cm) in height per year. Its slow growth rate means it requires minimal pruning and maintenance.
The ‘Wilma’ cultivar typically features attractive pale reddish-brown bark, which provides a lovely contrast to its vibrant foliage.
Cultural Requirements
Like most Thuja, the ‘Wilma’ prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types. It thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. However, to maintain its vibrant gold colouration, a sunny location is optimal. It’s reasonably tolerant of both dry and moist conditions, once established, but it’s best to avoid extremely wet sites.
Uses in Landscaping
Its compact size and striking colouration make it an excellent choice for:
- Specimen Planting: As a focal point in smaller gardens or mixed borders.
- Foundation Plantings: Near buildings or along borders.
- Rock Gardens: Given its smaller size and vibrant colour.
- Hedges: When planted en masse.
Maintenance
As a slow-grower, ‘Wilma’ requires minimal pruning. However, occasional pruning to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches may be necessary.
Hardiness
‘Wilma’ is very hardy and can tolerate cold winters, down to -20C.
