Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ – Sequoia sempervirens ‘Adpressa’ is a unique and compact form of the majestic coast redwood, perfect for UK gardens. This dwarf cultivar offers the charm and beauty of its giant relative in a manageable size. ‘Adpressa’ is known for its dense, rounded form and soft, feathery foliage that creates a striking texture in the garden.
Unlike its towering cousins, ‘Adpressa’ grows slowly, typically reaching only 2-3 metres in height over 10 years, with a similar spread. This compact size makes it suitable for small to medium-sized gardens, rock gardens, or even large containers. The foliage is a lovely blue-green colour, which can take on bronze tints in winter, adding year-round interest to your outdoor space.
The tight, congested growth of ‘Adpressa’ gives it a unique, almost bonsai-like appearance. Its short, densely packed needles create a soft, touchable texture that contrasts beautifully with other plants in the garden. This slow-growing nature means it requires little pruning to maintain its shape, making it a low-maintenance choice for busy gardeners.
‘Adpressa’ was discovered as a chance seedling in California and has since become a prized plant for conifer enthusiasts. Its rarity in UK gardens makes it a special addition to any plant collection.
Choose Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ to add a touch of the extraordinary to your garden. Its compact form and unusual texture make it a perfect focal point or specimen plant. Whether used in a mixed conifer bed, as part of a rock garden, or as a standalone feature, this dwarf redwood is sure to spark conversation and admiration among garden visitors.
Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ is relatively easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant it in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It prefers a sheltered position away from strong winds. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Pruning is generally not necessary due to its naturally compact form, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring if needed. Watch out for spider mites in dry conditions. Protect young plants from severe frost in their first few winters. With proper care, your ‘Adpressa’ will thrive and provide year-round interest in your garden.
If left unattended, it will form a broadly conical, rather open tree that will be 4 to 6 feet (1.5 – 2m) tall after 10 years. However, if subjected to regular shearing and occasional, ‘Adpressa’ will be a fairly tight, bright white ball.
