The Korean Fir Abies koreana is a truly captivating conifer that brings a touch of exotic elegance to UK gardens. Native to the higher altitudes of South Korea, this tree has adapted well to British conditions, offering year-round interest with its distinctive features and compact growth habit.
One of the most striking characteristics of the Korean Fir is its cones. Unlike many conifers where cones can be inconspicuous, the Korean Fir produces abundant, upright purple cones that stand proudly on the upper branches. These cones, which appear on mature trees, start as a vibrant violet-blue colour in spring, gradually deepening to purple as they mature. The contrast of these colourful cones against the dark green needles creates a spectacular display.
The foliage of the Korean Fir is equally appealing. The needles are a rich, glossy dark green on top, with silvery-white bands underneath. This two-tone effect becomes particularly noticeable when the branches move in the breeze, creating a shimmering, almost magical appearance.
In terms of form, the Korean Fir naturally grows into a neat, pyramidal shape. It’s a slow-growing tree, typically reaching heights of 4-10 metres in UK gardens over several decades. This slow growth rate, combined with its compact form, makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or as a specimen tree in larger landscapes.
The Korean Fir is also known for its cold hardiness, a trait that serves it well in UK winters. It can withstand temperatures well below freezing without damage, often looking its best when dusted with snow, which settles beautifully on its tiered branches.
In garden design, the Korean Fir is versatile. Its compact size allows it to fit into mixed borders, where its evergreen presence provides structure year-round. It’s equally effective as a stand-alone specimen, where its architectural form and colourful cones can be fully appreciated. The tree also works well in rock gardens or Asian-inspired landscape designs.
UK Grown. Supplied approx 20/40cm tall in a 2 litre pot.
