Cypress Trees

Cupressus spp.

Cypress trees, encompassing various species of Cupressus and Chamaecyparis, are elegant evergreen conifers known for their aromatic foliage and distinctive conical or columnar shapes. These versatile trees offer year-round structure and colour, making them popular for hedging, screening, and as striking specimen plants in UK gardens.

One of the most striking features of these trees is their architectural form. Many species grow in a naturally conical or columnar shape, providing strong vertical elements in garden design. This upright habit makes them excellent choices for creating privacy screens, windbreaks, or as focal points in the landscape.

Plant Cypress trees in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. Most species prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil. Water regularly when young, especially during dry spells. Once established, they’re relatively drought-tolerant. Prune lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain shape. Most Cypress trees are low-maintenance and resistant to pests and diseases.
