Shinyleaf Yellowhorn Trees

Xanthoceras sorbifolium

The shiny leaf yellowhorn tree – Xanthoceras sorbifolium is a rare and unusual small specimen tree prized for its showy spring blooms and distinctive summer foliage. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller gardens.

  • Fragrant upright clusters of white flowers appear in early spring.
  • Large, pinnately compound leaves are glossy reddish-purple when emerging.
  • Maturing to dark green, the foliage turns shades of yellow and red in fall.
  • Naturally multi-trunked with an attractive rounded canopy shape.

Plant Xanthoceras sorbifolium in well-draining, fertile soil in full sun to partial shade. It prefers a sheltered position away from strong winds. Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging.

This species is relatively low-maintenance once established but may benefit from occasional feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Protect young plants from severe frost in colder regions of the UK.
