Ornamental Quince Trees
Chaenomeles spp.
Ornamental quince trees – Chaenomeles species are vibrant, early-blooming deciduous shrubs. Their abundant, showy flowers in shades of pink, red, or white signal the arrival of spring, while their dense, spiny branches provide excellent habitat for birds.
- Profuse clusters of cup-shaped blossoms burst forth in early spring.
- Dense, tangled growth with thorny branches creates a secure bird habitat.
- Flowers give way to small, hard fruits often used for jellies and preserves.
- Easy to grow, low-maintenance shrubs for hedges, screens or specimens.
Plant flowering quinces in full sun and well-draining soil. Space 4-6 feet apart for a dense hedge or more widely for individual specimens. Prune immediately after flowering. Tolerant of most conditions once established.
