The Noble Fir – Abies procera is one of the most beautiful Christmas trees you can grow in your garden. Its blue-grey needles create a stunning display all year round. The branches grow in neat, horizontal layers, giving the tree a lovely tiered look. These strong branches are perfect for hanging Christmas decorations, but they also look amazing with a coating of winter frost or snow. The needles have a lovely silver-blue colour on top and white bands underneath. When young, this tree grows into a perfect cone shape without any pruning needed.

While it comes from the mountains of western North America, it grows brilliantly in British gardens. The tree gives off a fresh, festive scent that’s particularly noticeable in winter. Though it can grow quite tall in the wild, in gardens it stays at a more manageable size, typically reaching 15-20 metres over many years.

Noble Firs need well-drained soil and prefer slightly acidic conditions, though they’ll cope with most garden soils. Plant them in full sun or partial shade, making sure to give them enough space as they grow. They’re quite hardy and don’t need much fussing over. Water regularly in their first growing season to help them establish strong roots. After that, they’ll only need watering during very dry spells. These trees don’t need regular pruning – they naturally grow into a lovely Christmas tree shape. They’re best planted in autumn or early spring, and they’ll do well in most parts of Britain, though they prefer cooler areas.
