The Paperbark Maple is one of the most beautiful small trees for gardens. Its most striking feature is the gorgeous cinnamon-coloured bark that peels away in paper-thin layers, revealing fresh copper tones beneath. This stunning bark effect creates year-round interest, looking particularly magical when wet or lit by winter sun.

The leaves are made up of three leaflets, each with a rounded shape and deep green colour. In autumn, they put on a brilliant show, turning bright scarlet and orange before falling to reveal the tree’s sculptural form. This slow-growing tree has a naturally neat shape, developing a lovely spreading crown over time.

The small size makes it perfect for gardens where larger trees wouldn’t fit. Growing to about 6-8 metres over many years, it won’t overwhelm your space. It looks brilliant planted where its peeling bark can be admired up close, perhaps near a path or seating area. The tree casts light shade, making it possible to grow plants beneath.

The Paperbark Maple grows happily in most well-drained soils, including chalk. It prefers full sun or partial shade and needs shelter from strong winds while young. Water regularly in the first few growing seasons, but once established, it’s quite drought tolerant. No regular pruning is needed – just remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter if necessary.
