The Golden Full Moon Maple is one of the most striking Japanese maples you can grow in a garden. Its delicate, palmate leaves emerge in spring with a beautiful butter-yellow colour that holds wonderfully throughout summer. Each leaf is finely cut, creating an elegant lacy effect that catches the light beautifully. In autumn, the foliage turns into amazing shades of gold, orange and red. This maple grows slowly into a small tree, usually reaching about 3 metres tall over many years. The branches spread out to create a lovely dome shape, making it perfect as a focal point in any garden. The bright golden leaves light up shady corners and look fantastic when planted near purple or dark green plants. This maple brings a real touch of class to gardens and never fails to catch attention. It’s particularly good in smaller spaces where you want something special that won’t outgrow its welcome. The delicate golden foliage seems to glow in dappled shade, creating a wonderful focal point.
Golden Full Moon Maples need a sheltered spot protected from cold winds and strong sunshine. They do best in fertile, well-drained soil that stays consistently moist but not waterlogged. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal – this helps prevent leaf scorch. In pots, use good quality ericaceous compost and ensure proper drainage. Regular watering is important, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering. Apply a mulch in spring to keep the roots cool and moist. Feed once a year with a slow-release fertiliser. Very little pruning is needed – just remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter.
