Acer platanoides

£25.49

Norway Maple is easy to look after and thrives in most soil types, as long as the ground is not waterlogged. Plant in a spot with good light, though it will also manage in part shade. Water young trees regularly until they are settled in, then only during dry spells. It doesn’t need much feeding or pruning, just remove any dead or damaged branches as needed. Once established, it copes well with wind and city air.

The Norway Maple – Acer platanoides – is a striking addition to any garden, offering a burst of colour and reliable shade. This tree stands out with its broad, rounded crown and lush, green leaves that turn vibrant shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Its leaves are large, deeply lobed, and create a dense canopy, making it an excellent choice for those wanting to add a bit of privacy or a focal point to their garden. The Norway Maple is well-suited to a range of garden sizes, from larger spaces to generous borders in smaller gardens. It grows at a steady rate, eventually reaching an impressive height, but it can also be pruned to fit your preferred size and shape.

Spring brings small yellow-green flowers that appear before the leaves, adding early interest and attracting pollinators. These flowers are followed by distinctive winged seeds that spin as they fall, much to the delight of children and wildlife alike. The tree is hardy and can thrive even in urban areas, coping well with pollution and a variety of soil types. Its resilience makes it a good choice for gardeners who want a tree that asks for little but gives back plenty.

The Norway Maple has its roots in Europe and western Asia. It became popular in British gardens during the 18th and 19th centuries, valued for its fast growth and bold presence. Today, it’s celebrated for its adaptability and the welcome splash of colour it brings as the seasons change.

If you’re looking for a tree that gives strong visual impact with low fuss, the Norway Maple is a solid pick. It performs well in full sun or partial shade and is rarely troubled by pests or diseases. Its robust nature means it will flourish in most conditions, bringing structure and beauty to your outdoor space year after year. With its long lifespan, this tree can become a cherished part of your garden for generations.
