Red Maple – Acer rubrum is a versatile and striking tree, highly valued in gardens. This deciduous tree is renowned for its vibrant autumn colours, with leaves turning from green to brilliant shades of red and orange. Appearing in early spring, the Red Maple’s red and occasionally yellow flowers bring a welcome splash of colour, making it one of the first trees to signal the end of winter.
Ideal for a variety of settings, Acer rubrum can adapt to a wide range of soil types, although it prefers slightly acidic, moist conditions. This adaptability, combined with its moderate growth rate, makes it suitable for many garden sizes and styles. The Red Maple typically reaches a height of 15-25 metres, providing a balanced structure and scale for larger gardens.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the Red Maple plays a significant role in supporting local ecosystems. It provides habitat and food for wildlife, including birds and beneficial insects. Its dense canopy also offers shade and contributes to cooling the surrounding area, making it a practical choice for urban and suburban environments.
The Acer rubrum offers both beauty and functionality. Between its stunning autumn display, its environmental benefits and its easy-going nature in a range of conditions, it’s a popular choice for anyone looking to enhance their outdoor space with a tree that provides year-round interest.
