The Persian Silk Tree, also known as the Silk Tree or Mimosa, is a stunning ornamental tree that brings a touch of the exotic to UK gardens. This species, Albizia julibrissin, is famed for its delicate, feathery foliage and spectacular summer flowers, making it a brilliant choice for gardeners looking to add a tropical feel to their outdoor space.
Albizia julibrissin grows at a moderate rate, typically adding about 30-45cm per year. It can reach heights of 6–9 metres over time, with a broad, flat-topped or umbrella-shaped crown that can spread to 6–9 metres. This makes it suitable for medium to large gardens, or as a striking focal point in smaller spaces.
The tree’s standout features are its foliage and flowers. The leaves are finely divided and feathery, giving the tree a soft, lacy appearance. In summer, it produces spectacular fluffy pink flowers that resemble delicate silk threads, hence its common name. These flowers are not only beautiful but also fragrant, attracting bees and butterflies to the garden.
The Persian Silk Tree is hardier than it looks, but it does prefer warmer, sheltered positions in the UK. It’s best suited to southern parts of the country or urban areas where it’s protected from harsh winds. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant.
Gardeners love this tree for its exotic appearance and summer interest. You can use it as a stunning specimen plant, where its unique form and flowers will create a focal point. It looks fantastic in both modern and tropical-style garden designs, adding a touch of elegance and drama.
Wildlife enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the Persian Silk Tree is beneficial for pollinators. The nectar-rich flowers are particularly attractive to bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
For gardeners after a low-maintenance, eye-catching tree that brings a tropical feel to their garden, the Persian Silk Tree is a top choice. Its beautiful foliage and spectacular flowers add a touch of magic to any garden, creating a focal point that’s sure to impress throughout the summer months.
The Persian Silk Tree is relatively easy to care for, but it does need some attention to thrive in the UK climate. It prefers full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it’s relatively drought-tolerant, though it appreciates regular watering during dry spells. Feed it with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. In colder areas of the UK, it may need winter protection, especially when young. Mulching around the base can help protect the roots from frost.
