Alnus rubra, commonly known as the Red Alder, is a deciduous tree native to the western regions of North America, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Red Alder shares many of the features of our native Common Alder .
Red Alder is a medium to large-sized tree that typically reaches heights of 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 meters) when mature. It has a slender trunk with smooth, grayish-brown bark that often features prominent lenticels (small, raised pores).
The leaves of Alnus rubra are simple and alternately arranged along the branches. They are broadly oval or elliptical in shape, with serrated margins. The leaves are dark green and turn yellow and then brown in the autumn before falling.
Like many alder species, Red Alder produces long, cylindrical clusters of male and female flowers known as catkins. These catkins appear in late winter or early spring before the leaves emerge. Male catkins are yellow and dangle from the branches, while female catkins are smaller and appear more inconspicuously.
The female catkins develop into small, woody cone-like structures that contain tiny seeds. Over time these cones break apart, releasing the seeds to be carried away on the wind.
Red Alder is commonly found in moist, lowland areas, especially along riverbanks, streams, and in riparian zones. It thrives in wet, well-drained soils and is often associated with wetland ecosystems however it can grow equally well in our gardens if kept well watered.
This tree species plays a significant ecological role. Red Alder is a nitrogen-fixing species, which means it has a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in its root nodules. This ability enriches the soil with nitrogen, benefiting nearby plants.
Red Alder – Alnus rubra is relatively low maintenance, thriving in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soils but can adapt to a range of soil conditions. Regular watering is essential in its early years to establish a deep, extensive root system. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is rarely needed but can be done to remove any dead or damaged branches.
