Snowy Mespilus, botanically known as Amelanchier lamarckii, is a charming, multi-season interest tree that brings a touch of elegance to UK gardens. This small deciduous tree, also known as the Juneberry or Serviceberry, offers a spectacular display throughout the year.

In early spring, before the leaves unfurl, Snowy Mespilus bursts into life with a profusion of star-shaped, pure white flowers. These delicate blossoms cover the branches, creating a stunning snowy effect that gives the tree its common name. The flowers are a valuable early source of nectar for bees and other pollinators.

As the flowers fade, copper-tinged young leaves emerge, gradually turning to a fresh green for summer. The oval leaves provide a lovely backdrop for the small, dark purple berries that appear in early summer. These edible fruits are similar to blueberries in taste and are loved by birds.

Come autumn, Snowy Mespilus puts on another show as its leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red. This autumn colour can be quite spectacular, rivalling many other garden trees.

In winter, the smooth grey bark and elegant branch structure add interest to the garden when other deciduous trees are bare. Its compact size makes it suitable for smaller gardens or as part of a mixed border in larger landscapes.

Snowy Mespilus is a native of North America but has been cultivated in Europe for centuries. It’s a great choice for gardeners looking to support wildlife while enjoying year-round beauty in their outdoor spaces.
