The Dwarf Birch, or Betula nana, is a pint-sized marvel that’s perfect for gardens where space is at a premium. This little shrub is a native of Arctic and subarctic regions, so it’s as tough as old boots when it comes to cold weather. Growing to a modest height of just 0.5-1.2 metres, it’s a far cry from its lofty tree cousins. The leaves are tiny, rounded affairs, usually less than 2 cm across, and they turn a cracking golden-yellow in autumn. In spring, you’ll spot catkins – the males are longer and more showy, while the females are shorter and more upright.

Despite its small stature, the Dwarf Birch is a proper little powerhouse for wildlife. It’s a food plant for several moth species, and birds love to nip in for a snack on the seeds. In its natural habitat, it’s a key player in tundra ecosystems, providing food and shelter for all sorts of creatures.

In gardens, this shrub is brilliant for rock gardens, alpine troughs, or as part of a miniature woodland scene. It’s got a lovely, naturally compact growth habit that doesn’t need much pruning to keep it in shape. The stems have a reddish-brown colour that adds a bit of winter interest when the leaves have dropped.

Plant your Dwarf Birch in full sun or partial shade. It’s not fussy about soil type but does best in moist, well-drained conditions. It’s a fan of acidic soils, so if you’ve got alkaline soil, you might want to plant it in a container with ericaceous compost. Water regularly, especially during dry spells. It’s pretty low maintenance – a light trim after flowering if you want to keep it extra tidy is about all it needs.
