The Purple Leaf Birch is a stunning version of our native silver birch, offering deep purple foliage that makes it stand out in any garden. The leaves emerge in spring with a rich burgundy colour that softens to purple-green as summer progresses. Its distinctive white bark creates a lovely contrast against the dark leaves, making it eye-catching all year round. The branches have the same graceful, weeping habit as the standard silver birch, dancing in the slightest breeze. This tree is perfect for adding height and drama to gardens without taking up too much ground space. In autumn, the leaves turn a warm golden colour before falling, revealing the beautiful white bark structure for winter interest. It’s a brilliant choice for smaller gardens where you want something a bit different from the usual trees.

Plant your Purple Leaf Birch in full sun to get the best purple leaf colour. It’s happy in most soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water well for the first growing season to help establish a good root system. After that, it’s quite drought-tolerant. There’s no need to feed regularly – just add a general fertiliser in spring if growth seems slow. Don’t prune in late winter or early spring as birches can ‘bleed’ sap – if you need to prune, do it in late summer or early autumn.
