Calocedrus decurrens, commonly known as the Incense Cedar, is a majestic evergreen tree native to western North America. Growing these trees from seeds offers gardeners a rewarding and cost-effective way to introduce this impressive conifer to their landscapes. The seeds of the Incense Cedar are small, about 8-14 mm long, and come from the tree’s distinctive oblong cones.
When planted, these seeds grow into tall, aromatic trees with a narrow, columnar form that can reach heights of 30-50 metres in their native habitat, though they often stay smaller in gardens. The tree gets its common name from the fragrant, incense-like scent released when its foliage is crushed. Its bark is reddish-brown and becomes deeply furrowed with age, adding to its visual appeal.
The Incense Cedar is known for its durability and resistance to decay, making it a long-lived addition to gardens. It’s also valued for its drought tolerance once established, making it a good choice for gardeners concerned about water conservation. The tree’s dense foliage provides excellent shelter for wildlife, particularly birds.
Growing Calocedrus decurrens from seeds requires patience, as the trees are slow-growing, especially in their early years. However, this slow growth contributes to the tree’s longevity and sturdy nature. Gardeners who choose to grow from seed will have the satisfaction of nurturing these trees from the very beginning of their potentially centuries-long lives.
Natural Germination: Incense Cedar seeds benefit from natural stratification processes. In their native habitat, these seeds undergo a period of cold winter temperatures, which breaks their dormancy. To mimic these conditions, sowing the seeds outdoors in autumn allows them to experience natural chilling through the winter, preparing them for germination in spring.
Artificial Stratification:If you’re looking to speed up the germination process or if natural conditions are not suitable, artificial stratification is an effective method. This involves keeping the seeds in moist conditions at a cold temperature, usually between 2-4°C, for about 4-8 weeks. Soak for 24 hours prior. After this period, seeds are moved to a warmer environment to encourage sprouting. This method can be particularly useful for gardeners looking to control the timing of germination.
Natural germination of Calocedrus decurrens is much preferred over the artificial method.
