Siberian Pea Tree ‘Pendula’ – Caragana arborescens is a graceful weeping form of this hardy deciduous tree, perfect for adding architectural interest to smaller gardens. This particular specimen measures 80-100cm in height at the point of sale and features elegant cascading branches that create a natural waterfall effect, making it an excellent choice for contemporary garden designs or as a focal point in traditional settings.

The weeping branches are adorned with delicate pinnate foliage comprising small, bright green leaflets that emerge in spring and maintain their fresh appearance throughout the growing season. In late spring to early summer, the tree produces clusters of yellow pea-like flowers that are not only attractive but also provide valuable nectar for pollinating insects. These blooms are followed by small brown seed pods that add further seasonal interest.

Caragana arborescens ‘Pendula’ is renowned for its exceptional hardiness and ability to tolerate a wide range of challenging conditions. It thrives in poor soils where many other ornamental trees would struggle, making it particularly useful for difficult spots in the garden. The plant’s deep root system allows it to withstand periods of drought once established, though it will benefit from occasional watering during extended dry spells in its first growing season.

This weeping form is typically grafted onto a standard stem, creating an elegant umbrella-shaped canopy that requires minimal maintenance. The cascading branches can reach the ground if left unpruned, or they can be lightly trimmed to maintain a specific shape or size. The plant’s compact nature makes it ideal for smaller gardens, patios, or even large containers, where its architectural form can be fully appreciated.

Care Guide for British Climate

Plant in full sun for the best flowering performance, though the tree will tolerate partial shade. Caragana arborescens ‘Pendula’ is remarkably unfussy about soil type and will grow in anything from sandy to clay soils, provided drainage is adequate. It particularly excels in alkaline conditions but adapts well to neutral or slightly acidic soils.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal supplementary watering except during prolonged dry periods. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Pruning is best carried out in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and trim back the weeping stems if required to maintain the desired shape and prevent them from trailing on the ground. The tree can also be pruned immediately after flowering if preferred.

Caragana arborescens ‘Pendula’ is remarkably pest and disease-free, requiring virtually no intervention once established. It tolerates urban pollution, coastal conditions, and exposed sites, making it one of the most versatile small weeping trees available. The plant is also nitrogen-fixing, which means it actually improves soil fertility over time.
