Hornbeam ‘Pendula’ – Carpinus betulus ‘Pendula’ is a graceful weeping tree that brings architectural interest and year-round appeal to gardens of all sizes. This elegant specimen features cascading branches that sweep downwards from a central stem, creating a distinctive umbrella-like silhouette that becomes increasingly characterful with age. The weeping habit makes it an exceptional focal point for formal gardens, courtyards, or as a specimen tree in lawns where its unique form can be fully appreciated.
The foliage emerges in spring with fresh green leaves that have a delicate, pleated texture characteristic of hornbeams. These ovate leaves measure 5-10cm in length and create a dense canopy that provides dappled shade throughout summer. Come autumn, the foliage transforms into warm golden-yellow tones before turning a rich russet brown. Unlike many deciduous trees, hornbeam retains much of its dried foliage through winter, providing continued structure and interest during the colder months when many other trees stand bare.
The pendulous branches create a living sculpture that changes with the seasons. In spring, yellowish-green catkins appear alongside the emerging leaves, adding subtle ornamental value. The tree’s smooth grey bark becomes increasingly attractive as it matures, developing a distinctive fluted trunk that adds textural interest even in winter. This naturally compact weeping form requires minimal pruning, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking maximum impact with minimal maintenance.
This specimen is supplied at 100/120cm in height, representing the current size you’ll receive. It’s grafted onto a standard stem, with the weeping branches beginning at the graft point. The tree is ideal for planting in borders, as a lawn specimen, or in large containers on patios where space is limited. Its moderate growth rate and manageable size make it particularly suitable for smaller gardens where larger weeping trees would be impractical.
Hornbeam ‘Pendula’ tolerates a wide range of soil types, from heavy clay to chalk, though it performs best in fertile, well-drained soil. It’s remarkably adaptable and hardy, withstanding exposed positions and urban pollution with ease. The tree thrives in full sun to partial shade, though better autumn colour develops in sunnier positions. Once established, it demonstrates good drought tolerance, though young trees benefit from regular watering during dry spells.
Care Guide
Plant your hornbeam in a location that receives at least four hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and autumn colour. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter into the planting area to improve soil structure. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture during the first growing season whilst the root system establishes.
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth. A 5-7cm layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it clear of the trunk to prevent rot. Water during prolonged dry periods, particularly in the first two years after planting.
Pruning requirements are minimal due to the naturally compact weeping habit. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. If any upward-growing shoots appear from the graft union, remove these promptly to maintain the weeping form. The tree may occasionally produce straight shoots from the rootstock below the graft, which should also be removed.
