Golden Indian Bean Tree ‘Aurea’ – Catalpa bignonioides ‘Aurea’ is a truly magnificent deciduous tree that brings a touch of golden splendour to any landscape.

This cultivar is renowned for its large, heart-shaped leaves that emerge in spring with a vibrant golden-yellow hue, creating a dazzling display that persists throughout the growing season. As summer progresses, the foliage may develop subtle green tones, adding depth to its overall appearance.

The tree’s ornamental value is further enhanced by the appearance of showy clusters of white, orchid-like flowers in late summer, which are particularly striking against the golden backdrop of leaves. Following the flowers, long, slender seed pods develop, resembling bean pods, which persist on the tree well into winter, adding interest to the bare branches. With its medium to large size and spreading canopy, ‘Aurea’ makes an excellent specimen or shade tree, offering a unique combination of golden foliage, attractive flowers, and interesting seed pods that ensure year-round appeal.

While the tree is hardy in the UK, young plants may benefit from protection during severe frosts, especially in the early years. Hardy in all of UK when mature. (-20C to -15C).

Plant the Golden Indian Bean Tree ‘Aurea’ in well-draining, fertile soil in a position that receives full sun to partial shade. It tolerates a wide range of soil types but prefers moist, slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods, ensuring consistent moisture without waterlogging. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and maintain vibrant leaf colour.
