Catalpa bignonioides, commonly known as the Southern Catalpa or Indian bean tree, is a deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States. This sizable tree is celebrated for its distinctive characteristics, boasting large, heart-shaped leaves that form a dense canopy, providing generous shade during the summer months. The tree showcases eye-catching trumpet-shaped flowers, which are white with captivating purple and yellow accents, creating an aesthetically pleasing display. These blooms typically grace the tree from late spring to early summer.
Following the flowering season, elongated and slender seed pods, often likened to cigars, emerge and persist on the tree throughout the winter, further enhancing its all year round interest.
Catalpa bignonioides is known for its hardiness and adaptability to a wide range of soil conditions, which makes it a popular choice for landscaping and as a street tree. The tree’s resilience and rapid growth are additional factors that contribute to its popularity in horticulture.
Choose a well-draining location with full sun to partial shade for your Catalpa bignonioides. Ensure that the tree has enough space to grow without crowding other plants.
This tree is adaptable to different soil types but prefers fertile, loamy soil. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogged roots, which can be detrimental to the tree’s health.
Spring or early autumn is the best time to plant Catalpa bignonioides in the UK, allowing it to establish its root system before the onset of extreme weather. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and insulate the roots from temperature extremes.
Prune the tree in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or damaged branches and to maintain its shape. Catalpa bignonioides can be pruned to encourage a more compact growth habit.
Young tree may benefit from staking or support to help them establish an upright growth habit.
While the tree is hardy in the UK, young plants may benefit from protection during severe frosts, especially in the early years. Hardy in all of UK when mature. (-20C to -15C).
