The Katsura Tree is one of the most enchanting deciduous trees you can grow in British gardens, celebrated for its extraordinary seasonal display and the delightful sweet fragrance that fills the autumn air. This 40/60cm specimen arrives in a 9cm pot, perfectly sized for establishing quickly in your garden whilst offering excellent value. Cercidiphyllum japonicum is a true four-season performer that rewards patience with decades of beauty.

Spring brings fresh heart-shaped leaves in captivating shades of bronze and pink, creating a soft haze of colour as the tree awakens. These delicate leaves gradually mature to a lovely blue-green through summer, providing elegant foliage that dances gracefully in the breeze. The real magic happens in autumn when the Katsura transforms into a spectacular display of amber, apricot, gold and pink tones that rival any Japanese maple.

What truly sets this tree apart is its remarkable autumn fragrance. As the leaves begin to turn and fall, they release a wonderful scent often described as burnt sugar, candy floss or caramelised toffee. On still autumn days, this sweet perfume can drift across your entire garden, creating an unforgettable sensory experience that makes the Katsura utterly unique among ornamental trees.

The Katsura develops an attractive pyramidal to rounded crown with graceful, slightly pendulous branches that give it an elegant architectural presence. The smooth grey bark becomes increasingly attractive with age, developing shallow fissures that add winter interest. This is a tree that earns its place in any garden, whether planted as a stunning specimen, incorporated into mixed borders, or positioned where you can appreciate that autumn fragrance up close.

Growing a Katsura in British gardens is wonderfully straightforward. These trees thrive in moist, fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. They perform best in full sun to partial shade, though some protection from harsh winds helps prevent leaf scorch on those tender spring shoots. Whilst established trees show reasonable drought tolerance, consistent moisture produces the finest foliage and autumn colour.

Plant your Katsura between autumn and early spring, enriching the planting hole with plenty of organic matter. Water thoroughly during the first two growing seasons to encourage deep root establishment. A generous mulch of bark or compost helps retain moisture and suppress weeds whilst feeding the soil. Feed annually in spring with a balanced fertiliser or a top-dressing of well-rotted manure.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter. The Katsura naturally develops an attractive shape, so resist the temptation to over-prune. These trees are generally pest and disease-free, making them a low-maintenance choice for busy gardeners.

The Katsura is hardy throughout Britain, tolerating temperatures well below freezing once established. Young trees benefit from shelter during their first winter or two, particularly from cold, drying winds. With minimal care, your Katsura will become a cherished garden feature that improves with every passing year.
