Cercis canadensis, Eastern Redbud ‘The Rising Sun’ is a truly special small tree that puts on a magnificent show throughout the growing season. The heart-shaped leaves emerge in spring with a stunning mix of orange, lime and apricot tones, creating a warm, glowing effect in your garden. As the leaves mature, they settle into a lovely lime-green colour, but new growth continues to show those brilliant orange shades.

At just 4 metres tall when fully grown, this tree is perfect for smaller gardens. In early spring, before the leaves appear, the bare branches come alive with clusters of delicate pale pink flowers. These sweet pea-like blooms cover the branches, creating a beautiful display that stands out against other spring flowers.

The rounded crown develops naturally without much pruning needed, making this an easy-care choice for busy gardeners. Its compact size means it works brilliantly as a focal point in smaller spaces or as part of a mixed border in larger gardens.

Plant your Eastern Redbud in a sheltered spot with well-drained soil. While it’s happy in full sun or partial shade, more sun will give you the best leaf colours. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Add a layer of mulch in spring to keep the roots cool and moist. Very little pruning is needed – just remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and those lovely orange-tinted leaves.
