The Chinese Redbud is a stunning small tree that brings magnificent colour to spring gardens. This compact tree puts on a spectacular show with masses of bright pink flowers that appear directly on the bare branches in early spring, before the leaves emerge. The heart-shaped leaves unfold with a bronze tint, maturing to a fresh green in summer, then turning to butter yellow in autumn. This tree is perfectly suited to smaller gardens, reaching only 3-4 metres in height after 10 years. Unlike its larger American cousin, this neat tree won’t outgrow its space.

The flowers are particularly charming and unusual, clustering along the branches in tight groups. These blooms are actually edible and can add a lovely splash of colour to spring salads. After flowering, interesting flat seed pods develop, adding winter interest to your garden.

The Chinese Redbud makes a perfect focal point for patios and smaller spaces. It works brilliantly in mixed borders or as a standalone specimen. The tree’s natural vase-shaped form means it needs very little pruning to maintain its lovely shape.

Plant your Chinese Redbud in well-drained soil in a sheltered spot with full sun or partial shade. While young trees need regular watering, established specimens are quite drought tolerant. Apply a layer of mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. This tree rarely needs pruning, but if required, do so in late summer to avoid bleeding. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring as new growth begins. Protection from harsh winds will help maintain the tree’s attractive shape.
