Japanese Quince ‘Nivalis’ Chaenomeles speciosa is a delightful shrub that brings pure white flowers to the garden in early spring. The name ‘Nivalis’ comes from the Latin word for snowy, perfectly describing its pristine white blooms that appear on bare branches from late winter.

The flowers stand out beautifully against the dark branches, creating a stunning display when much of the garden is still dormant. After flowering, the shrub produces glossy, dark green leaves that provide an attractive backdrop throughout summer. In autumn, large yellow-green fruits develop, which although too sharp to eat raw, make wonderful jam.

This variety is perfect for brightening up shady corners or adding simple elegance to mixed borders. It works particularly well when trained against walls or fences, where its spreading habit can be shown off to best effect.

The pure white flowers look stunning when planted alongside early spring bulbs, adding a touch of sophistication to any garden. The blooms are also popular with early bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Japanese Quince ‘Nivalis’ is a robust and easy-to-grow shrub that suits most garden conditions. It thrives in any reasonable soil as long as it’s well-drained. While it flowers best in full sun, it tolerates partial shade well. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove any crossing branches. A spring feed with general-purpose fertiliser and a mulch around the base will keep it healthy and flowering well.
