Japanese Quince ‘Pink Lady’ Chaenomeles japonica is a stunning spring-flowering shrub that brings early colour to gardens. This compact variety bursts into life with masses of shell-pink blossoms as early as February, often when the rest of the garden is still sleeping.

The flowers appear on bare branches, creating a striking display that really stands out against winter’s backdrop. After the flowers fade, glossy dark green leaves emerge, providing attractive foliage through summer and autumn. Small, apple-like fruits develop later in the year, adding extra interest.

‘Pink Lady’ is perfect for small gardens, making a brilliant addition to mixed borders or as a standalone feature. It’s particularly good when grown against a wall or fence, where its spreading habit can be trained to show off the flowers to their best advantage.

This variety is more compact than other Japanese quinces, making it ideal for modern gardens where space might be limited. The flowers are a magnet for early bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable plant for wildlife gardens.

Japanese Quince ‘Pink Lady’ is a tough, adaptable shrub that’s easy to grow in most gardens. It grows well in any reasonable soil, though it prefers it to be well-drained. Plant in full sun or partial shade – more sun typically means more flowers. It can be pruned after flowering to keep its shape, cutting back any overcrowded branches. Feed with a general fertiliser in spring, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
