Japanese Quince ‘Texas Scarlet’, or Chaenomeles x superba ‘Texas Scarlet’, is a stunning deciduous shrub that brings a burst of colour to gardens in early spring. This compact variety is known for its vibrant scarlet-red flowers that bloom before the leaves appear, creating a striking display against bare branches. The flowers are a welcome sight after winter and attract bees and other pollinators to your garden.

‘Texas Scarlet’ is a smaller, more manageable variety of Japanese Quince, making it perfect for small gardens or as a low hedge. It grows into a neat, rounded shape that doesn’t require much pruning to maintain its form. After flowering, the shrub produces glossy green leaves that provide a lovely backdrop for other plants throughout the summer.

This shrub is tough and adaptable, thriving in most soil types and conditions. It’s a great choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance plant that offers high impact. The ‘Texas Scarlet’ can be used as a standalone specimen, in mixed borders, or trained against a wall or fence for a splash of colour in tight spaces.

While it does produce fruit in autumn, the quince from this variety are small and quite tart. They’re not typically eaten fresh but can be used to make jams or jellies if desired. The main appeal of this plant, however, is its stunning spring display and its ability to thrive in gardens with minimal fuss.

Japanese Quince ‘Texas Scarlet’ is easy to care for, making it suitable for gardeners of all skill levels. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade. It’s not fussy about soil type but prefers well-drained conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Prune after flowering if needed to maintain shape or size. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. This shrub is generally pest and disease resistant, adding to its low-maintenance appeal.
