‘Chilworth Silver’ grows into a neat, conical shape, reaching about 4–6 metres tall and 2–3 metres wide over time. This cypress is a tough cookie, well-suited to the British climate. It’s happy in full sun or partial shade and can handle a range of soil types, as long as they’re well-drained. It’s also quite tolerant of urban conditions, making it a great choice for town gardens.
Gardeners love ‘Chilworth Silver’ for its versatility. You can use it as a standalone specimen tree, where its silver-blue colour will create a stunning contrast against green foliage plants. Or plant a few to create a unique, shimmering hedge. It looks fantastic in both modern and traditional garden designs, adding a touch of sophistication wherever it’s placed.
Wildlife fans will be pleased to know that cypresses provide good shelter for birds, especially in winter. The dense foliage offers protection from harsh weather and predators.
Lawson Cypresses have been popular in UK gardens since the mid-19th century, but ‘Chilworth Silver’ is a more recent variety, selected for its particularly attractive colouring.
For gardeners after a low-maintenance, eye-catching evergreen that brings year-round interest, Lawson Cypress ‘Chilworth Silver’ is a top choice. Its beautiful silver-blue foliage adds a touch of magic to any garden, creating a focal point that’s sure to impress visitors. Lawson Cypress ‘Chilworth Silver’ is pretty easy to look after, which is great news for busy UK gardeners. It’s happy in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. You don’t need to feed it much – a light application of general-purpose fertiliser in spring is enough. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but if you want to keep it compact, you can trim it lightly in late spring or early summer.
