The Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Drooping Solo’ is a captivating weeping conifer that brings graceful movement to British gardens. This unique cultivar develops dramatically pendulous branches that cascade downward like a living waterfall. The soft, feathery foliage drapes elegantly in rich green sprays, creating a sculptural effect that draws the eye. Each branch tip curves and droops, giving the tree an almost artistic quality. The main trunk grows upright while the side branches weep strongly, resulting in a narrow, columnar form with flowing sides.

This exceptional weeping cypress reaches 4-6 metres tall but maintains a narrow width of just 1-2 metres, making it perfect for smaller gardens where space is precious. The tree’s unique habit makes it an outstanding specimen plant, particularly effective near water features where its weeping form mirrors the flow of water. In winter, the drooping branches become even more dramatic when outlined with frost or a dusting of snow. The dense, evergreen foliage provides year-round structure while the weeping habit adds constant movement and interest.

‘Drooping Solo’ proves remarkably versatile in garden design. Its narrow footprint allows placement in tight spaces where broader conifers wouldn’t fit. The tree works brilliantly as a vertical accent in mixed borders or as a striking focal point in gravel gardens. Japanese-style gardens particularly benefit from its flowing form. The cultivar adapts well to British conditions, tolerating various soil types and coastal exposure. Birds appreciate the sheltered nesting sites within the drooping branches, making this beautiful conifer valuable for wildlife too.

Plant ‘Drooping Solo’ in autumn or spring in moist, well-drained soil. This cultivar tolerates most soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds which can damage the delicate drooping branches. Full sun to partial shade suits it well, though the best form develops in good light. Water thoroughly during establishment and in dry spells for the first two years. Once established, supplemental watering is rarely needed except in drought. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy growth. The weeping habit develops naturally without pruning, though you can remove any damaged branches in late spring. Stake young plants until the central leader strengthens. Tie drooping branches loosely if needed to prevent breakage in snow. Mulch annually to retain moisture and protect roots.

Supplied approx 80-100cm tall in a 10 litre pot.
