The Lawson Cypress ‘Pearly Swirls’ is a captivating evergreen conifer that brings a touch of whimsical elegance to UK gardens. This cultivar of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana is prized for its distinctive creamy-white variegated foliage, which creates a swirling, pearlescent effect, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add year-round colour and unique texture to their outdoor space.
‘Pearly Swirls’ grows at a slow to moderate rate, typically adding about 10-15cm per year. It can reach heights of 2-3 metres over time, with a compact, narrowly conical to pyramidal shape that adds vertical interest to the garden. This slender form makes it ideal for small to medium-sized gardens, as a specimen plant, or as a stunning addition to mixed borders and container plantings.
The tree’s standout feature is undoubtedly its foliage. The scale-like leaves are a mix of green and creamy-white, arranged in a swirling pattern that gives the impression of movement. This variegation holds well throughout the year, with the creamy-white portions becoming particularly striking in winter, adding a bright, pearlescent glow to the garden during the darker months.
‘Pearly Swirls’ is hardier than its delicate appearance might suggest. It’s well-adapted to the UK climate and can handle both full sun and partial shade, although it develops the best colour in full sun. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but is adaptable to various soil types. It’s also relatively tolerant of urban conditions, making it a versatile choice for many garden settings.
Gardeners love this conifer for its unique colour and compact form. You can use it as a stunning specimen plant, where its swirling, variegated foliage will create a focal point. Or plant it in groups to create a soft, colourful screen or hedge. It looks fantastic in both modern and traditional garden designs, adding a touch of year-round brightness and sophistication.
Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate that the dense growth of ‘Pearly Swirls’ can provide good shelter for small birds and insects, especially in winter. The compact form offers protection from harsh weather and predators.
For gardeners after a low-maintenance, eye-catching evergreen that brings year-round colour to their garden, Lawson Cypress ‘Pearly Swirls’ is an excellent choice. Its beautiful variegated foliage and elegant form add a touch of pearlescent magic to any garden, creating an attractive focal point that’s sure to impress throughout the seasons.
Lawson Cypress ‘Pearly Swirls’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring if desired, but it generally doesn’t require much feeding. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
