Lawson Cypress ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ – Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ is a charming dwarf conifer that brings a touch of silvery elegance to UK gardens. This compact evergreen is perfect for smaller spaces, rock gardens, or as a focal point in mixed borders. ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ forms a neat, globe-shaped bush that typically reaches only 0.5 to 1 metre in height and width over 10 years, making it ideal for gardens of all sizes.

The foliage of ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ is its standout feature. The soft, scale-like leaves are arranged in flat sprays, creating a delicate, feathery texture. The leaves have a striking silvery-white colour, which is particularly vibrant on new growth. This silvery hue contrasts beautifully with the inner foliage, which retains a darker green colour, adding depth and interest to the plant’s appearance.

This variety of Lawson Cypress is well-suited to the UK climate. It’s hardy and can cope with cold winters, though it appreciates some shelter from harsh winds. ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ thrives in full sun, which helps to maintain its compact shape and vibrant colour, but it can also tolerate partial shade.

Gardeners will appreciate the low-maintenance nature of this plant. Its slow growth rate means it maintains its compact shape with little pruning needed. This makes it an excellent option for busy gardeners or those looking for easy-care plants. Its small size also means it’s suitable for container growing, perfect for patios or balconies where space is at a premium.

Lawson Cypress ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ adds year-round interest to the garden. Its silvery foliage provides a bright accent among other plants and looks particularly striking in winter when other plants have lost their leaves. Whether you’re looking to add some evergreen colour, create a low-maintenance focal point, or bring a touch of winter brightness to your garden, ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ is a versatile and attractive choice.

Lawson Cypress ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ is easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Water regularly when young, but once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning isn’t essential, but you can lightly shape it in late winter if desired.
