Lawson Cypress ‘Summer Snow’ is a charming evergreen that can bring a touch of brightness to your UK garden all year round. This variety stands out with its lovely creamy-white foliage tips, which contrast beautifully with the deeper green inner branches. It’s as if the tree has been dusted with a light snowfall, even in the height of summer.

‘Summer Snow’ grows into a neat, pyramidal shape without much fuss. It reaches about 3-4 metres tall over 10 years, making it a good fit for most gardens. You won’t need to worry about it outgrowing its space too quickly. Its compact form means it can work well in smaller gardens or as an eye-catching feature in larger ones.

One of the best things about this tree is how it can lighten up a shady corner. The white-tipped foliage seems to glow, especially when caught by the sun, adding a bit of sparkle to your garden even on dull days. This makes it particularly useful in the UK, where we often have overcast weather.

Gardeners often choose ‘Summer Snow’ for its easy-going nature. Once it’s settled in, it doesn’t need much looking after. It’s hardy enough to cope with UK winters and doesn’t mind urban pollution, so it’s a good pick for town gardens too.

This cypress works well in different garden styles. It can add a formal touch to traditional gardens or bring some structure to more relaxed, cottage-style planting. You could use it as a standalone feature, plant a few to create a screen, or mix it with other plants in a border.

Lawson Cypress has been popular in UK gardens for over 150 years. It was first brought here from North America in the 1850s. The ‘Summer Snow’ variety was developed later for its particularly attractive variegated foliage.

Lawson Cypress is relatively easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Water regularly when young, but once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning isn’t essential, but you can shape it in late winter if needed. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. This
