This medium-sized tree is known for its distinctive foliage, which features a unique variegated pattern of green and creamy-white. ‘White Spot’ typically grows to a height of 4-8 metres over 20 years, forming a neat, conical shape that adds structure and year-round interest to the garden.
The foliage of ‘White Spot’ is its standout feature. The soft, scale-like leaves are arranged in flat sprays, creating a delicate, feathery texture. The green leaves are liberally spotted and splashed with creamy-white variegation, giving the tree a bright, cheerful appearance. This variegation is particularly striking in winter, when it contrasts beautifully with other evergreens in the garden.
This variety of Lawson Cypress is well-suited to the UK climate. It’s hardy and can cope with cold winters, though it appreciates some shelter from harsh winds. ‘White Spot’ thrives in full sun to partial shade, with the best colour development occurring in brighter locations.
Gardeners will appreciate the relatively low-maintenance nature of this tree. It doesn’t require regular pruning to maintain its shape, though you can trim it lightly if desired. ‘White Spot’ is also tolerant of a range of soil types, as long as they’re well-drained.
Lawson Cypress ‘White Spot’ adds structure and brightness to the garden throughout the year. Its variegated foliage provides a lovely contrast to solid green plants and can help to lighten up shady areas of the garden. Whether you’re looking to add some evergreen interest, create a low-maintenance focal point, or establish a beautiful specimen tree, Lawson Cypress ‘White Spot’ is a versatile and attractive choice for UK gardens.
Lawson Cypress ‘White Spot’ is relatively easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Water regularly when young, but once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning isn’t essential, but you can shape it in late winter if needed. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring
