Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’, commonly known as Lawson’s Cypress ‘Columnaris’, is a striking evergreen conifer that brings architectural elegance to gardens and landscapes. This cultivar is prized for its narrow, columnar growth habit, which creates a strong vertical accent in any setting. The dense, upright branches are clothed in soft, scale-like foliage that ranges from blue-green to grey-green in colour, offering year-round interest and texture. As the tree matures, it develops a slender, pencil-like silhouette that can reach heights of 8-12 meters while maintaining a slim width of just 1-1.5 meters. This compact form makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or as a living boundary marker.
The ‘Columnaris’ cultivar stands out among other Lawson’s Cypresses for its exceptionally tight, vertical growth pattern. Unlike some conifers that can become sparse or open with age, this variety maintains its dense foliage from top to bottom throughout its life, creating an effective screen or windbreak even in narrow spaces. The foliage is arranged in flat sprays, giving the tree a slightly feathery texture that softens its rigid outline.
One of the most appealing aspects of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’ is its low maintenance nature. Once established, it requires little pruning to maintain its shape, naturally growing into its characteristic columnar form. This makes it an ideal choice for gardeners looking for a structural element that doesn’t demand constant attention.
Gardeners and landscape designers often choose this cultivar for its versatility. It can be used as a solitary specimen to create a focal point, planted in groups to form a dense screen or windbreak, or even incorporated into formal garden designs as a living architectural element. Its narrow form makes it particularly useful in smaller urban gardens where space is at a premium.
For those interested in creating wildlife-friendly gardens, while ‘Columnaris’ may not provide the same level of habitat as some native species, its dense foliage can offer shelter and nesting sites for small birds. The tree’s ability to create sheltered microclimates can also benefit other plants and wildlife in the garden.
If you’re after a tree that offers year-round structure, elegant form, and low maintenance requirements, Lawson’s Cypress ‘Columnaris’ is an excellent choice. It can be a valuable asset in both traditional and contemporary garden designs, bringing a touch of evergreen sophistication to a variety of landscapes.Caring for Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’ is relatively straightforward. Plant it in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils but can adapt to a range of soil types as long as they’re not waterlogged. Water regularly when first planted to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant but will appreciate deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Fertilisation is generally not necessary unless the soil is particularly poor. Pruning is minimal – remove any dead or damaged branches as needed, but avoid heavy pruning as this can disrupt the tree’s natural columnar form.
