Nootka Cypress ‘Moonshot’ – Chamaecyparis nootkatensis is a striking narrow conifer that grows in a tight, upright rocket shape. The deep-green foliage hangs in graceful sprays, creating a waterfall effect along the straight, upright stem. Unlike many conifers that spread wide, this variety keeps a slim, columnar form that’s perfect for smaller spaces. Fresh growth appears in spring with a lighter, silvery tint that contrasts nicely with the mature foliage. The branches point slightly upward before arching down, adding to its rocket-like appearance. It’s a brilliant choice for adding height without width to gardens. The foliage stays fresh and bright all year round, looking particularly good when covered with morning dew or frost.

Plant your Moonshot Nootka Cypress in any well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. While it’s not fussy about soil type, good drainage is essential. Water regularly in the first growing season until established, then only during dry spells. No regular feeding is needed – a yearly application of general fertiliser in spring is plenty. The natural columnar shape means very little pruning is required. If needed, trim lightly in late summer to maintain the narrow form. Though naturally wind-resistant, avoid very exposed sites while young.
