The Nootka Cypress Xanthocyparis nootkatensis ‘Pendula’ is a graceful weeping conifer that brings real drama to any garden. The branches cascade elegantly downward, creating a stunning architectural feature that looks remarkable all year round. Its blue-green foliage forms a dense, flowing curtain that moves beautifully in the breeze.

This Xanthocyparis grows slowly, making it perfect for smaller gardens where space is at a premium. Over time, it develops into a narrow, upright form with sweeping pendulous branches that can reach down to the ground. This striking shape means it works brilliantly as a focal point or statement piece.

Originally found in North America, this particular variety has been cherished in gardens for over 100 years. The foliage stays fresh and vibrant throughout winter, offering much-needed colour during the dull months. Its neat habit means it rarely needs pruning, making it a low-maintenance choice for busy gardeners.

This remarkable Xanthocyparis brings real character to both modern and traditional gardens. It pairs wonderfully with spring bulbs planted beneath its canopy and looks particularly good near water features where its reflection adds extra impact.

Your Xanthocyparis nootkatensis ‘Pendula’ will thrive in well-drained soil in either full sun or partial shade. While it’s quite adaptable, it prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system, but once settled, it’s quite drought tolerant. No regular pruning is needed – simply remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter if necessary. This tree is very hardy and can cope well with British winters, though it appreciates some shelter from harsh winds.
