Hinoki Cypress ‘Fernspray Gold’ is a stunning evergreen conifer that will bring a touch of elegance to your garden. This beautiful tree, known botanically as Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Fernspray Gold’, is prized for its unique, fern-like foliage that shimmers with golden-yellow hues. It’s a slow-growing variety, making it perfect for smaller gardens or as a feature in larger landscapes. The soft, feathery texture of its foliage adds interest and contrast to your garden year-round.
In winter, the gold colour deepens, providing a warm glow in the colder months. This tree is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add a touch of Japanese-inspired design to their outdoor spaces. Its compact size means it’s also suitable for container growing, allowing you to bring its beauty to patios or balconies. The ‘Fernspray Gold’ variety was discovered as a chance seedling in Oregon, USA, in the 1980s, making it a relatively new addition to the horticultural world. Its unique appearance and versatility have quickly made it a favourite among UK gardener.
Thanks to its ability to stay small, ‘Fernspray Gold’ is a favourite for accentuating rock gardens, borders, or even as a stand-alone specimen in a pot or container.
‘Fernspray Gold’ rarely requires pruning due to its slow growth rate. Regular watering is essential during its early years and in prolonged dry spells, but it’s essential not to let the plant sit in soggy soil.
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Fernspray Gold’ is hardy when mature and can withstand cold temperatures down to -20C.
