Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Teddy Bear’, commonly known as Teddy Bear Hinoki Cypress, is a delightful dwarf conifer that brings charm and texture to gardens. This slow-growing evergreen shrub forms a compact, globe-shaped mound that resembles a cuddly teddy bear, hence its endearing name. Its dense, soft foliage is made up of tiny, scale-like leaves in a rich, deep green colour that maintains its vibrancy throughout the year.

As it matures, Teddy Bear Hinoki Cypress typically reaches a height and spread of about 3-4 feet, making it an ideal choice for small gardens, rock gardens, or container planting. Its manageable size and low maintenance needs make it perfect for busy gardeners or those with limited space. The plant’s rounded shape adds a sense of softness to garden designs, contrasting beautifully with more structured or angular elements.

Teddy Bear Hinoki Cypress is also an excellent choice for creating miniature landscapes or as a focal point in Japanese-style gardens. Its slow growth rate means it won’t outgrow its space quickly, allowing you to enjoy its charming form for many years. By adding this adorable conifer to your garden, you’ll create a year-round point of interest that’s sure to bring a smile to your face every time you see it.

Caring for Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Teddy Bear’ is relatively straightforward. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade, ensuring it gets at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil but can adapt to various soil types as long as they’re not waterlogged. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This plant is drought-tolerant once established but appreciates occasional deep watering during dry spells. Pruning is generally not necessary, but you can lightly trim it in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape if desired. Feed annually in spring with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser formulated for conifers. Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites, especially during hot, dry weather, and treat promptly if spotted. Teddy Bear Hinoki Cypress is generally disease-resistant but may occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered.
