‘Sungold’ forms a compact, mound-shaped habit that rarely needs pruning, making it a low-maintenance choice for busy gardeners. It typically reaches a height and spread of about 1-1.5 metres over 10 years, making it ideal for gardens of all sizes. The soft, feathery texture of its foliage adds a gentle touch to the landscape and can help soften hard edges in your garden design.
This variety of Sawara cypress is well-suited to the UK climate, thriving in full sun to partial shade. It’s a great choice for gardeners looking to add year-round structure and colour to their outdoor spaces. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, ‘Sungold’ is an easy-to-grow plant that will bring joy to your garden for years to come.
Sawara Cypress ‘Sungold’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring if desired, but it generally doesn’t require much feeding. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
