New & Unique Conifer! Southern White Cedar ‘El Paso’ – Chamaecyparis thyoides is an extraordinary dwarf conifer that defies conventional expectations of what a conifer should look like. This remarkable cultivar of the Atlantic white cedar brings a sculptural, almost otherworldly quality to gardens, with its distinctive architectural form that resembles a succulent or cactus more than a traditional evergreen.

The most striking feature of ‘El Paso’ is its unusual growth habit. Instead of the pyramidal outline most conifers develop, this cultivar builds a rounded, compact silhouette from twisting stems that rise out of a rustic, characterful trunk. The branching pattern creates a wonderfully sculptural effect that adds year-round interest and serves as a genuine conversation piece in any planting scheme.

What truly sets ‘El Paso’ apart is its remarkably soft foliage, which feels more like touching a succulent than a conifer. The fine, scale-like leaves create a tactile experience that surprises visitors, whilst the overall cactus-like appearance makes this plant an exceptional choice for contemporary garden designs, gravel gardens, or as a specimen plant in containers. The foliage typically displays attractive blue-green tones that can develop subtle bronze hints during colder months, adding seasonal variation to its already distinctive appearance.

This dwarf conifer works beautifully in a variety of garden settings. Its compact nature and slow growth rate make it ideal for smaller spaces, whilst its architectural form ensures it commands attention even when planted amongst larger specimens. Give ‘El Paso’ a spot where those sculptural qualities can be enjoyed close up — flanking an entrance, perhaps, in a raised bed, or woven into a mixed planting with ornamental grasses and perennials.

The plant’s unusual appearance makes it particularly valuable for adding textural contrast in planting schemes. It pairs wonderfully with other architectural plants, Mediterranean species, or in modern minimalist designs where its form can be truly appreciated. The fact that it remains compact means it won’t outgrow its position, making it a reliable long-term addition to your garden.

Care Guide

Southern White Cedar ‘El Paso’ thrives in moist, well-drained acidic to neutral soil and prefers full sun to partial shade positions. In gardens, ensure the planting site doesn’t dry out completely, as this species naturally occurs in wetland areas of eastern North America. However, it adapts well to ordinary garden conditions provided the soil retains some moisture.

Water newly planted specimens regularly during their first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, the plant becomes more tolerant of varying conditions, though it performs best when the soil doesn’t become excessively dry during summer months. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.

In early spring, feed with a slow-release fertiliser made for conifers or acid-loving plants. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds that can encourage soft growth. The plant requires minimal pruning, though you can remove any dead or damaged growth in late spring. Its naturally compact habit means it maintains its distinctive form without intervention.

‘El Paso’ is hardy and tolerates winter conditions well, though young plants benefit from protection from harsh winds in exposed positions. The plant is generally pest and disease resistant, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners seeking something genuinely different.
