The Japanese Red Cedar ‘Dinger’ Cryptomeria japonica is a compact and slow-growing evergreen tree that makes a wonderful addition to any UK garden. With its distinctive pyramidal shape and lush, feathery foliage, this cultivar is a true standout.
At its current height of 20-40cm, the ‘Dinger’ is a perfect choice for smaller gardens or as a focal point in a larger landscape. Its rich, green needles have a soft, almost fuzzy texture that adds visual interest throughout the year. As the tree matures, the bark develops a unique, cinnamon-coloured exfoliating pattern, adding further visual appeal.
While the ‘Dinger’ may be compact in size, it still packs a punch when it comes to year-round interest. In the spring, the new growth emerges with a hint of bronze, before settling into a deep, verdant green. During the autumn months, the foliage can take on warm, coppery tones, creating a stunning seasonal display.
This Japanese Cedar is a low-maintenance choice that thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained, acidic soils, but is adaptable to a range of soil types. Regular watering during the first year after planting will help establish a strong root system, and a light pruning in early spring can help maintain its compact, pyramidal shape.
Japanese Cedars, including the ‘Dinger’ cultivar, are generally easy to care for in UK gardens. They prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained, acidic soil. When first planted, the ‘Dinger’ will benefit from regular watering to help establish a strong root system.
Once established, the ‘Dinger’ is quite drought-tolerant and only requires occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Mulching around the base of the tree with organic matter, such as bark chips or compost, can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning is typically only necessary in early spring to maintain the tree’s compact, pyramidal shape. Avoid pruning during the hot summer months, as this can stress the plant. With its low-maintenance needs, the ‘Dinger’ is an excellent choice for busy gardeners who still want to enjoy the beauty of a Japanese Cedar in their outdoor space.
