The needles are a rich green colour, taking on bronze tints in winter, which adds extra interest throughout the year.
‘Spiralis’ grows into a narrow, columnar shape, reaching about 3-4 metres tall over 10 years. Its slim profile makes it perfect for smaller gardens or for adding vertical interest without taking up too much ground space. You could even grow it in a large container on a patio or balcony.
One of the best things about this tree is how it can add texture and movement to your garden. The spiralling branches catch the light in interesting ways, creating shadows and patterns that change throughout the day. This makes it a great focal point in any garden design.
Gardeners often choose ‘Spiralis’ for its unusual looks and easy-going nature. Once it’s settled in, it doesn’t need much looking after. It’s hardy enough to cope with UK winters and doesn’t mind urban pollution, so it’s a good pick for town gardens too.
This cedar works well in different garden styles. It can add a quirky touch to formal gardens or bring some structure to more relaxed, contemporary designs. You could use it as a standalone feature, plant a pair to frame an entrance, or mix it with other plants in a border.
Wildlife fans will be pleased to know that ‘Spiralis’ can provide shelter for birds and small animals. Its dense growth offers a safe spot for nesting and hiding from predators.
If you’re after a plant that looks good all year without needing lots of work, ‘Spiralis’ is a great choice. It keeps its interesting shape and colour through all seasons, so your garden always has a point of interest.
Japanese Red Cedar has been grown in the UK since the 19th century, but the ‘Spiralis’ variety is a more recent introduction. It brings a modern twist to this classic tree, perfect for gardeners looking for something a bit different.
For UK gardeners looking to add year-round structure and a unique focal point to their gardens, Japanese Red Cedar ‘Spiralis’ is an excellent option. Its twisted form, rich colour, and easy-care nature make it a valuable addition to any outdoor space.
Looking after Japanese Red Cedar ‘Spiralis’ is straightforward, which is good news for gardeners. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun or partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it settle in. Once established, it’s quite tolerant of dry spells but will appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Feed it with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its spiral shape, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches if needed. It’s generally pest and disease-free, but keep an eye out for any signs of stress. ‘Spiralis’ is hardy enough to cope with UK winters without extra protection, though young plants may benefit from shelter from strong winds.
