China fir – Cunninghamia lanceolata – brings a touch of year-round greenery to gardens with its soft, elegant needles and conical form. This evergreen tree is loved for its lush, feathery foliage, which stays vibrant and fresh even in the winter months. The needles are a gentle green, sometimes with a hint of blue, and they fan out in whorls along the branches. In spring and summer, new growth adds a brighter tone to the tree, creating a lively contrast against older, darker leaves. As it grows, China fir forms a tall, graceful shape that stands out as a striking centrepiece or adds structure at the back of a border. It works well as a specimen tree or can be planted in groups for a dramatic screen.
China fir is valued by gardeners who want an easy-to-care-for evergreen that copes well with British weather. Unlike some conifers, it’s tolerant of different soils and isn’t fussy about where it’s planted. It has a good resistance to pests and diseases, which means less worry about its long-term health. The soft, feathery needles don’t drop as often as other evergreens, which helps keep lawns and patios tidy. Birds love to shelter in its dense branches, adding life and interest to your garden year-round.
With its roots in China, Cunninghamia lanceolata has been grown for centuries for both beauty and usefulness. In its native country, it’s admired for its elegant looks and is often planted in parks and temple gardens. In Britain, it’s been a favourite of collectors since Victorian times, prized for its unique texture and reliable evergreen colour.
If you want to create a peaceful retreat or add structure to your garden design, China fir is a superb choice. Its neat shape needs little pruning to keep looking good. Over time, the lower branches can be trimmed up to reveal the reddish-brown bark, which adds another layer of interest. Whether you have a large garden or a more modest space, this tree brings lasting beauty. Its upright habit makes it suitable even for smaller gardens if kept pruned when young.
China fir is an excellent investment for gardeners who want something different from the usual pines and spruces. With its soft needles, elegant form and easy care, Cunninghamia lanceolata will reward you year after year with lush green colour and a calming presence in your garden.
China fir grows best in well-drained soil but is quite forgiving of most garden conditions. Choose a spot in full sun or light shade where the tree will have room to reach its full height. Water well during dry spells in the first couple of years while it settles in. Once established, it needs very little attention apart from the occasional prune to shape if required. Mulch around the base each spring to help keep moisture in and weeds down. China fir is hardy enough to cope with British winters.
