Leylandii ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is a cracking choice for UK gardeners looking to add a splash of colour to their outdoor space. This eye-catching variety of Cuppressocyparis leylandii stands out with its bright golden-yellow foliage that seems to glow, especially when caught by the sun. It’s a brilliant option for those who want to create a colourful screen or hedge quickly.
Like all Leylandii, ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is a fast grower, shooting up by up to 3 metres per year when young. It can reach heights of 20 metres or more if left unchecked. This rapid growth is both its biggest selling point and its biggest challenge. It’s fantastic for creating quick screens but needs regular trimming to keep it under control.
The tree has dense, feathery foliage that starts off as a bright golden-yellow in spring, deepening to a rich gold as the season progresses. This vibrant colour provides a stunning contrast against other green plants in the garden. The thick growth also provides excellent shelter for wildlife, especially birds, making it a good choice for gardeners keen on supporting local fauna.
‘Castlewellan Gold’ is incredibly versatile. You can use it to create formal hedges, privacy screens, or windbreaks. It’s also effective at reducing noise pollution, making it popular in urban and suburban areas. When planted as individual specimens, it can make striking vertical accents in larger gardens.
This tree is tough as old boots. It’s hardy throughout the UK and copes well with a range of soil types. It’s also tolerant of coastal conditions, making it a good choice for seaside gardens where many other plants struggle.
‘Castlewellan Gold’ was discovered in Northern Ireland in the 1960s and has since become a popular choice for gardeners who want the fast growth of Leylandii with a more colourful twist.
For gardeners after a quick-growing evergreen screen or hedge with a golden glow, Leylandii ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is hard to beat. It’s fast, tough, and effective. Just remember, with great growth comes great responsibility – you’ll need to keep on top of pruning to keep it in check. If you’re up for the task, ‘Castlewellan Gold’ can be a brilliant addition to your garden, providing year-round colour, privacy, and shelter.
Leylandii ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is fairly easy to care for, but it does need regular attention to keep it in shape. It grows best in full sun, which brings out its golden colour, but can tolerate partial shade. It isn’t fussy about soil type, as long as it’s well-drained. When first planted, water regularly to help it establish. Once settled, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Feed annually with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring. The key to managing ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is regular pruning. Trim at least once a year, preferably twice, to maintain the desired size and shape. Don’t let it get too tall before trimming, as it won’t regrow from old wood.
