The Arizona Cypress is a splendid evergreen tree that brings year-round blue-grey foliage to your garden. This striking conifer grows into a neat pyramid shape without much fuss. The lovely blue-grey needles stay bright through all seasons, making it a brilliant choice for adding colour when other plants are dormant. It works really well as a single specimen tree or as part of a screen. In smaller gardens, it can be kept trim with light pruning. The bark peels away in strips as it ages, showing lovely patterns in reddish-brown. This tough tree came from the mountains of Arizona and Mexico, where it dealt with both heat and cold. Now it’s a favourite in gardens across Britain, where it grows well in most conditions.
Plant your Arizona Cypress in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. While it copes with most soil types, it won’t like sitting in wet ground. Water regularly in the first growing season to help roots establish, then it needs little attention. It’s quite drought-tolerant once settled in. No regular feeding is needed – just add some general fertiliser in spring if growth seems slow. Trim lightly in late summer if needed to keep its shape, but heavy pruning isn’t necessary. Watch out for strong winds in exposed gardens, as the tree can catch the wind like a sail when mature.
