The Monterey Cypress ‘Wilma’ – Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Wilma’ is a brilliant choice for smaller gardens. This compact, golden conifer forms a neat, rounded ball shape without any need for pruning. The foliage is a bright, cheerful yellow that really shines in winter gardens when other plants are dormant. Unlike its parent tree, ‘Wilma’ stays naturally small and compact, usually reaching just 1-2 metres over many years.

The tiny leaves are packed tightly together, creating a dense, almost fluffy appearance. When crushed, the foliage gives off a lovely lemony scent. It’s particularly good for adding year-round colour and structure to gardens. The foliage keeps its golden colour throughout the year, though it might show hints of lime green in summer. It works brilliantly in pots on patios or as a bright spot in borders. This dwarf variety gives you all the charm of a Monterey Cypress but in a size that suits modern gardens.

‘Wilma’ is quite easy to look after and grows well in most garden conditions. Plant it in full sun to get the best golden colour – too much shade will make the foliage more green than yellow. It needs well-drained soil but isn’t fussy about soil type. Water regularly when first planted, but once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. It doesn’t need regular pruning to keep its rounded shape, though you can trim it lightly if needed. This tough little tree copes well with coastal conditions and can handle exposed sites. Feed it with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring if it’s growing in a pot.
