This deciduous tree is a horticultural marvel, boasting deeply incised, fern-like leaves that create an intricate, lacy appearance.
The foliage emerges in spring with a captivating bronze-purple hue, creating a soft, ethereal effect. As summer progresses, the leaves deepen to a rich purple-green, providing a dramatic backdrop in the garden. Autumn brings another transformation as the foliage turns a warm coppery-gold, adding a final flourish of colour before leaf fall.
With its medium to large size and unique leaf shape, ‘Mercedes’ makes an excellent specimen tree, drawing the eye and adding architectural interest to any landscape. Its distinctive form and changing colours throughout the seasons ensure that this tree remains a focal point of interest year-round.
Also known as Fagus sylvatica var. heterophylla ‘Mercedes’
Plant Fagus sylvatica ‘Mercedes’ in well-draining, fertile soil in full sun to partial shade. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil but can tolerate alkaline conditions. Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods, ensuring consistent moisture without waterlogging. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring if necessary, but minimal pruning is typically required. Protect young trees from late spring frosts which can damage emerging leaves. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage colour.
