The Midnight Feather Beech is a rare and remarkable variety of our native beech. This stunning tree has deep purple-black leaves that are unusually narrow and feathery, creating a delicate, flowing effect in the garden. The leaves unfurl in spring with a bronze tint, darkening to an intense purple-black that holds its colour well through summer. Unlike common beech, the narrow leaves give this tree a lighter, more graceful appearance. It’s a slower-growing tree than standard beech, making it suitable for smaller gardens. The leaves rustle beautifully in the breeze, adding movement to your garden. In autumn, the leaves turn coppery-brown and often stay on the tree through winter, giving you year-round interest.

Plant your Midnight Feather Beech in any well-drained soil, though it prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. It grows well in both sun and partial shade, though the deepest purple colour develops in full sun. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons until well-established. After that, it only needs watering during long dry spells. Add a layer of mulch around the base each spring, keeping it away from the trunk. No regular pruning is needed unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size.
