Beech ‘Purple Fountain’ – Fagus sylvatica is a graceful weeping tree that creates a stunning focal point in gardens. The branches cascade down in a fountain-like manner, draped with rich purple leaves that hold their colour well through summer. Unlike the wide-spreading habit of standard beech trees, this variety grows upright before arching elegantly downward. It forms a narrow, column-like shape that’s ideal for smaller spaces. The leaves unfurl in spring with a bright purple flush, deepening to a rich burgundy as they mature. In autumn, they fade to coppery tones and often stay on the branches through winter, giving year-round appeal. The weeping form creates wonderful movement in the garden as the branches sway gently in the breeze.

Plant your Purple Fountain Beech in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, though the best purple colour develops in full sun. It will grow in most soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons until well-established. After that, it only needs watering during dry spells. Add a layer of mulch in spring, keeping it away from the trunk. The weeping form develops naturally, so little pruning is needed – just remove any damaged branches in late summer.
